Spinning is the process of creating thread or yarn by twisting fibers together. The drop spindle was developed from the stick: a notch was cut to hold the yarn and a weight added to give momentum to the stick as it twisted the fiber into yarn. The yarn was then stored on the spindle.
Early American women and children used drop spindles to make and store yarn if they did not have a spinning wheel. The yarn was used to weave or knit clothing or blankets. American women are using spindles again today as a portable craft.
